A picture
I guess I'm not really sure what the sayings actually is ... but I think it says that a picture means a thousand words. I don't have a picture to show, but I'm glad I don't. I want to write.
Today, in the eve of September the 17th 2004, mi abuelito, Enrique Centellas, took his last breath. For weeks now his heart and lungs had kept him alive, while his mind fell farther and farther away.
Grandpa's heart kept him living because of his strength and passion for life. My grandfather's lungs with powerful breaths and words of love would not let go until he had to give up. In a sad and distant hospital room that never understood him, far removed from his country and memories, he slowly and peacefully took his final breathe. They will never know or understand who this amazing person was and how he could have helped them. Grandpa always had advice.
Therefore este es Para mi Abuelo Centellas,
You showed me how to laugh and enjoy life. Remember when you would tell me stories of when you lived in Oruro. Advise I will never forget:
"If you don't have a umbrella, do what we used to in. Take a plastic bag. Cut out armholes. It will keep you dry."
We laughed ... you had this way of laughing.. a .. I can't believe we did that laugh. You always made me smile.
Your excitement over the "little" things in life. Remember when you bought me those shoelaces from a shop in "El Centro". You had gone downtown, conducted proper business, and returned home with new laces at the best price for my shoes. All this before I was even awake.
I remember your stories of danger. Tips from you, on how to avoid a robber in downtown La Paz. A quick side step and spin to avoid a cleverly lain trap. You even demonstrated me the steps, just in case I didn't catch it the first time ;)
I remember you watching me play soccer. These simple words from you, shaped how I played. "Tienes que tener ganas Andy" After that, I did. I made captain 2 yrs in a row on my varsity team. I wanted to make you proud.
I remember the day I realized how my father followed in your footsteps. I hope to do the same.
I remember learning what the word Don meant. I couldn't imagine anyone more deserving of that title then Don Enrique Centellas. In a suit my grandfather was ready for anything. Well-combed and refined gray hair. Walking with style and grace, a truly distinguished gentleman.
The legacy will continue. Story telling with Funny sounds and heavily interactive hand motions is something we Centellas all do now!
Mi quierido abuelo whom I loved so dearly. I will always miss and remember you. Remember how we always said goodbye?
Nos vemos pronto.
