For Ali

01.30.2003

Ali called tonight from California. Among other topics we talked about, she complained that my weblog's no longer as "personal" as it once was ... and I concur. Although I've enjoyed my recent go at punditry, I miss writing about my personal life. I'll try to post more personal items. In the meantime ...

I wrote a page for my disseration today. It sounds pathetic, I know. But it took me days of working out just how to structure the first several pages of my first chapter (which I'm rewriting, not writing totally from "scratch"). I'm on a good track. I'll keep writing and give Dr. Hauptmann at least 2-3 pages on Friday.

I'm trying to force myself to write daily. I've terrible self-discipline. My solution was promising Dr. Hauptmann to turn in something every Friday. We talked over dinner and figured that out as a solution. She doesn't have to read them right away (knowing her, she will); at least it forces me to write consistently.

Dr. Rhodes, the department's new Latin Americanist, looks promising. We met up for coffee at Klein's a few days ago. I gave her a copy of my dissertation proposal ... and she already finished reading it! Wow. I might replace one of my committee members w/ her (some of them don't read as, um, quickly as I'd like them to). She also gave me some great leads on dissertation funding. We're supposed to meet again next week.

Dan's close to opening his moped shop (1977 Mopeds). He's gonna be a Kinetic dealer, which is really exciting. He's also worked out how to be a Simonini distributor (they make amazing performance parts). All that's missing is finding a storefront to rent. It's all coming together for him.

What else is new? Let's see. Annie (calico cat) seems slightly healthier (her diet might be paying off) but still breathes loudly. Sophie (small black cat) meows all the time; she's really odd. The two chase each other all over my apartment. Sophie's a bit braver every day; she sleeps under the covers (sometimes). Unfortunately, she now gets into everything, and I mean everything.

I agree with Ali, yes your page has changed tones. I like to read more "Personal" writing, but I did find all your posts very enlightening. I read it everyday, with my morning oatmeal and coffee. You write great editorials, I think it's something you should look into.

Old fat cats are the best... .. just word of caution. Don't roll over at night and flatten your plump cat into a catcake.
