Good night

02.04.2003

Today was a pretty good, tiredness notwithstanding. Let's see, I woke up just in time to get to campus to collect over 100 four-page essays I have to grade w/in a few days. Thursday I collect over 100 exams. This week is all about grading.

I wrote (what I think is) an excellent transition paragraph for my dissertation introduction. A single paragraph doesn't sound like much, but that paragraph opened up a whole new structure to my chapter's introduction, which will allow the rest of the chapter to flow more easily. I edited another four or five paragraphs to follow the new structure and should get a bit farther tomorrow (until I stop to grade essays). I've fallen way behind in the writing of my dissertation ... but today was a breakthrough and a springboard. I feel good.

I played Worms World Party (on Sega Dreamcast) against Dan today and won more games than I lost. I've gotten good, real good. The trick is knowing how to use the homing pigeon bombs. Cheap trick, but oh so effective. I'm going to miss hanging out w/ Dan when he moves out of The Parkmont to open his moped shop.

The keynote of the evening: A new episode of FX's The Shield. You've really got to check out that show. If you need to learn some of the backstory, let me know. It's the grittiest cop drama I've ever seen. Vic Mackey is the dirtiest cop w/ a heart of gold you'll ever imagine. A few weeks ago -- to get a major drug lord to leave LA -- Mackey beat the guy to a bloody pulp w/ a hardcover law book before burning his face on a stove top. Oh, and they showed it all. Yep, hard core. It's the only show I know where you really can't sympathize w/ any (and I mean any) of the characters.
