Schizophrenia's calling me home

The Club Soda show wasn't much fun. Have I ever mentioned how much I hate frat boys? Yes, I know, that's a generalization. Not all frat boys are jackasses. And not all jackasses are frat boys. And I happen to be a member of a fraternity. But I still hate so-called "frat boys" and their stupid attitudes.

Club Soda was abnormally packed for a WIDR show. And I didn't recognize any of the people there; this wasn't a scenester crowd. It was very disconcerting.

First, some jerk heckled Pilot Scott Tracy -- at least the Tracy part of the band. See, Pilot Scott Tracy is a concept band. Scott dresses up like an airline pilot; Tracy dresses up like a flight attendant. So some kid yelled (and I'm not kidding): "I wanna sleep w/ a flight attendant!" Trying to one-up his friends who'd also been heckling Tracy (aka Dr. Tracy Cox-Stanton).

That was the last straw, so I turned and asked, "Are you f***ing thirteen?!"

His response was the typical sexist macho crap: "Is she your sister or something?" Whether she's my sister, mother, wife, daughter, girlfriend -- it's irrelevant. Sexist heckling is not acceptable behavior. It's just not.

That started a long debate where this guy tried convincing me that what he was doing was somehow "art" (since being offensive is supposedly the same as being artistic) or art criticism. It was typical pseudo-intellectual drivel serving as rationalization for vulgar and offensive behavior. In short, philistine logic.

Unfortunately, the show got worse. Once the heckling began, frat boys heckled Scott and Tracy throughout their show. To their credit, Scott and Tracy handled themselves really well. But ... Wesley Willis still hadn't played.

If you don't know, Wesley Willis is clinically schizophrenic. Clinically. I think most of the crowd heard about him on Howard Stern or something. They started heckling him ... and Willis didn't look well ... and deep down inside, I hope one of those little Abercrombie jerks gets hurt by a 300-pound schizophrenic black man.

I left before the madness.

Thats craziness. I would have liked to hear the debate. I would concede that a blurry line has developed between being sleazy and "acting sleazy." I first noticed it at the KPOW shows, where the feminist wrestlers pretend to be thoughtless vixins and the fans "pretend" to be abnoxious idiots. Any sexist chant could be heard in the crowd and I wasn't sure what to make of it. For me to make any judgement on the Tracy situation I'd have to be there to weigh the atmosphere, but knowing that it's jocks and not artsy kids somehow affects my judgement. Make of that what you will. But then such sexism goes back to popular use of the word "fag" among many of the Kzoo enlightened; I've heard all of our friends use it- I may have used it at some point- At what point does irony undo itself?

I agree that there's a fine line now between "art" and just plain vulgarity. But this kid definitely crossed it. And what's more, he knew it. His response to me (when I asked if he was f***ing thirteen) was to ask me if this was my sister or something. He knew that my objection was to his sexism; it was essentially an admission of guilt.

Why do I think he's a philistine (as defined by Arendt)? Because of his ridiculous arguments. Numerous times he compared Pilot Scott Tracy to the Velvet Underground (they do not sound like the Velvet Underground). He was intelligent to understand that PST is a concept band -- and therefore fits in the "avant garde" category. But he was too stupid to really have even a contextual frame of reference.

He continuously defended vulgarity for vulgarity's sake. I tried to explain to him that there's a time and context for everything. Graffiti, for example, can be a legitimate art form. But if someone walked into the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art and spray painted over the exhibitions this wouldn't be art. Not to this joker. He thinks that'd be amazing -- disregarding that the destruction of the earlier art would take away the free speech of those artists (and our right to see them). Nope. He just thought it'd be a hilarious "statement" or some such crap. Typical philistine.

Now I'm really glad that I didn't go to that show.

I really do want to see Pilot Scott Tracy, but I'm glad that I didn't go if I would have had to endure those kinds of circumstances. I fucking hate hecklers. You don't like something... GO AWAY. You don't want to go... then drink you beer and shut the fuck up.

I hate Wesley Willis' music. I feel sorry for him in a lot of ways. You're right Miguel, he's not well. I think that's the inherient problem with Willis' "popularity."

Yeah, every morning radio show from Howard Stern to Two Bit Joe on local rock station WXXX thought it was hilarious. "Hey, hey, listen to the guy sing about vultures eating his ass! This shit's hilarious!"
So, WIllis sold tons of records...good for him, right?

...but really it's not. I'm not necessarily sure that it's a great thing that people think he's "hilarious." Especially in the way that he's presented. The majority of his popularity stems from the lowest common denominator of humor-- Look, Laugh, and Point at the Funny Retarded Guy.

Not from the indie rock crowd who mostly think that its awesome that someone in the situation that Willis is in, can still put out records...
and for me and a lot of this crowd, the novelty is gone.
Willis doesn't write great music. The majority of his songs are exactly the same with a few minor lyric and key changes. Willis' popularity was at its peak in '95 - '96. We're six years gone from then. I know I've lost my interest (that happened about 5 minutes into having to listen to an entire WW record), but just think about what the morons that worship Howard Stern think of Wesley Willis now.

"Hey, let's go Look, Laugh, and Point at the WASHED UP, Funny, Retarded Guy."

and hey Miguel, stop trying to debate morons.

Yeah, those guys at the show were some real morons, but Pilot Scott Tracy put them in their place for sure. Calling them out and busting on them in front of the crowd was sweet revenge.

That just seems to be the way Scott handles things, he seems to encourage the heckles. The Causey Way was the same way when I saw them in Detroit years back.
Here is my question, if those guys had a beef with Pilot Scott Tracy, why did I see every guy that Pilot Scott confronted at the end of the show buying up Pilot Scott Tracy C.D's and shirts. I figure they would beat Scott's ass, not give him money. I cant figure people out, so I will not try. I am glad I got to see the show and I am glad I bought a Pilot Scott Tracy C.D, they Rock! Pilot Scott said he had a great time(flight).
I wonder what Miss Tracy thinks?
