To my Chicago friends

03.22.2003

I don't think anti-war protests are unpatriotic. I don't think it's treason to protest the war. We're not "required" to support the president or the troops in wartime. That kind of right-wing drivel is not the kind of patriotism I recognize.

I echo the sentiments of my friend Bill. In his support for the war, his reasons for that support, and our mutual defense for the right to oppose the war.

I also hope protesters continue to be active in politics - whatever the result of this war. The right to dissent and protest is a wonderful right we enjoy in this country. I also hope that protesters remain peaceful, respect the rights of their opponents, and don't make themselves a public nuisance (I don't think the "vomit in" was productive).

But we also have the right to vote. Many of the protesters are young people - a demographic that doesn't traditionally vote. I hope one added benefit of this campaign is an increase in voter turnout among all sectors of the population.

I have friends protesting in Chicago. I wholly respect their right to protest - even though I disagree w/ them. They have their reasons, I'm sure. I have mine. In part, I support the war because I want the rights that we enjoy in this country extended to the Iraqi people. I grew up in a third world country and have some idea of the cost of liberty.

I'm encouraged by the sights of Baghdad. Despite the bombing, cars are out in the streets and people are milling around. It really looks as if the military is trying to avoid civilian casualties.

Most encouraging are the images of cheering Iraqis, hugging troops, shaking their hands, thanking them for toppling Hussein - even asking "what took you so long?" (source). That is the main reason for my support for this war.

War is a terrible thing. Anyone that's read my previous posts knows I'm no warmonger. War should be the last resort. Violence is not The answer. But sometimes it's the least-worst option available. There are things worse than war - a brutal totalitarian regime w/ a cult of personality is one of them.
