Doh!

05.05.2003

I just saw a preview for an upcoming FOX-17 News story about some schmuck who actually fell for one of the oldest email scams in history. I'd like to be sympathetic. But come on! Even if you didn't know it was a common email scam, the text of the message itself gives it away.

If the family of an exiled Nigerian dictator offers to share ill-gotten millions w/ you if you email them your bank account number — and you believe them! — you're a certified idiot. You have to pass a driver's test to drive a car. Maybe they should give IQ tests before you can go on the internet.

Funny, today a woman who works in my building came into our rooms with an envelope that she could not place, it did not belong to anyone in the building. The name on it was similar to hers. We encouraged her to open it. She did..and as soon as she read the words "Nigerian national bank" I started laughing. "It's a scam!" I pronounced...And then encouraged her to not miss this rare opportunity.
I am happy to see that Fox17 is now doing reports on how fucking stupid some people are. Please tell me that was the focus of the report, and not how this innocent simpleton was preyed upon by a vicious and uncreative scam-artist.

I didn't see the report, so I don't know what it was. But the preview made it sound like it was taking the idiot's side: "This could happen to you!"

BTW, since I made that post, I got a version of the Nigerian scam posted as a comment to my site. I've deleted it.

Is this an international conspiracy?! ;-)
