Rock'n'roll I do
06.22.2003I just came back from what might've been the best, funnest wedding I've ever attended. Allison Spicer and Eric Gielow finally got hitched! The ceremony was outdoors in Kalamazoo's beautiful Crane Park. A beautiful, sun-filled afternoon.
This wasn't a "traditional" ceremony by any means. And that's not a bad thing. Not at all. After all, you can't expect two indie rockers who work w/ an indie record label (Eric, Makoto Records) and work in interior design (Allison) to not do things their own way.
The bridesmaids walked down the aisle unescorted, as did the groomsmen. The bride wore a satin red dress, because she wanted to. And, yes, John Wagner officiated the ceremony (he took an internet course).
The best part: The entire ceremony took less than 15 minutes. That's right. 15 minutes. Yet nothing was left out. John Wagner gave a short talk on the beauty of marriage, there was an exchange of vows (Allison & Eric wrote their own), and then they were proclaimed husband and wife. No sermons. No hymns. Nothing unnecessary.
Just two people madly in love w/ each other and close friends and family.
Afterwards, the party assembled at The Union, on the Kalamazoo Mall. Allison & Eric arrived in a blue Mini Cooper (which they parked on the sidewalk). We enjoyed the most amazing hours d'oeuvres (the Cajun barbecued shrimp was amazing!). And people took full advantage of the open bar.
We were treated to mixed CDs made by Allison & Eric. And since their official bride & groom dance was to Yo La Tengo's "Our Way To Fall," that song (which I loved before) is now forever linked to my friends Allison & Eric, madly in love, dancing together.
Eventually, the wine & liquor flowed and the dancing began in earnest (w/ Eric, Allison, and Ivo taking turns as DJ). You know the music's good when Allison & Eric (two of the people w/ the most immaculate taste I've ever met) are in charge of the music. Rock. Roll. Dance.
Here's a picture of me all dressed up (w/ my A+E heart pin). Oh, and just so you know it's "official" — here's a picture of John Wagner holding the state marriage certificate.

Although I only made it to the reception this has been my favorite wedding to date. Well done, congratulations again Eric and Alison.

Thanks, Miguel. I'm glad you had such a good time. We had fun too!
P.S. I just wanted to let you know that Eric doesn't own a record label. On occasion he'll assist Joel with Makoto, but he doesn't really have anything to do with it. Oh, and also, I'm just a wannabe interior designer. Ha ha ha.

I was at Crane Park later that day for an ice cream social (I know..exciting life eh???)
But anyway, some people who live in the neighborhood were there and commented that they'd seen the wedding and the blue Union Jack Mini... and they said it was cool. So apparently, Alison and Eric were Westnedge Hill Neighborhood celebrities for the day.
