You carry Kalamazoo in your heart
07.23.2003J. Edmund is back in America. I've had a great time hanging out w/ Evil Bill (back from Japan). But now I have two formerly "exiled" friends back in the good ol' US of A. Unfortunately, I'm leaving for a year in just over a month.
But today I got to ride out to The Game Shop for comics w/ all of my comics-reading friends. Especially J. Edmund, who was the most influential person in convincing me that comics (or "graphic novels") are a legitimate literary genre worthy of respect.
I also spent the later part of the afternoon guest co-hosting Bay Jo's radio show. In honor of DJ Hype's return (that's J. Edmund's alter ego), our show was on the unique and wonderful things that make America, well, great. We had a large volume of callers which kept the show funny, fast-paced, and interesting. Well, except for the pseudo intellectual who seemed more interested in giving us a not-so-short oral book report about (or rather worship of) Chomsky (here's a good critique of Chomsky). But we listened to him politely. After all, that's what America's about, right? Free speech and respecting each other's differences, right?
The evening was capped off in true American fashion w/ friends gathering at an ethnic restaurant (Chinese) for an all-you-can-eat buffet, pleasant conversation, and general merrymaking.

The fact that I have had the oppertunity to travel ... within and out of the US I agree on your idea of a "True America Evening". For example, last week we had dinner at my friend Karen's house. Her parents were in from Brasil visiting, we cooked Egyptian food. Our group consisted of ten people, all almost all from different countries.... Belgium, Japan, Mexico, Bolivia, Brasil, USA, and Egypt. Conversations were help in four different languages... French, Spanish, Portuguese and English. We didn't have a Egyptian night.... or something to that effect. It was just a group of people, hanging out, eating anf enjoying good company and conversation. :)
