Wow. I haven't blogged in days. So here's a wrap-up of the last few days' events:

Thursday. A lovely dinner at the Walls' home. I first met Joe Walls about three years ago on a trip to El Salvador, to visit our sister parish. I'd never met a 40-year-old who not only knew who The Magnetic Fields were, but counted them among his favorite bands. Needless to say, Joe's a pretty cool guy and I enjoyed my ten days in El Salvador w/ him. We kept in touch over the years, and I even accompanied Holly (Joe's wife) and their son (Jeff) on my second trip. We sat outside, enjoying homemade pizza (made entirely from scratch by Joe & Holly) and Mexican beers, and caught up on each other's lives.

Friday. Nothing nearly as exciting. But I did go see Freddy vs. Jason. And, yes, it was an utterly insipid movie. It's not really scary, it's not really funny, it's not really suspenseful. I've never enjoyed the slasher flick genre, but it was an experience (my first time watching a slasher flick all the way through and my first time seeing one at a theater).

Saturday. A surprise visit by Dan & Bill led to a day of chess and Worms World Party. We also made an effort at playing Star Wars Starfighter. But we were miserable at it. We complained that there were too many confusing buttons and that we couldn't figure out who the enemy was or who our allies were.

Sunday. Spent most of the day riding around the Edison neighborhood on The Motron looking for stolen mopeds. We managed to round up two out of three, which isn't too bad. The highlight involved finding a yellow Batavus in the back of a pickup truck, parked in a driveway. The owner didn't seem to know how the moped got into his truck. He seemed to be OK w/ us taking it, until he suddenly snapped — apparently two dozen kids on mopeds couldn't haul away a mangled Batavus fast enough — and threatened to smash up the moped or charge us for it or some other ignorant crazyness. Sunday evening ended, of course, w/ Adult Swim at the Upson & Wagner estate. The much-anticipated (especially by me) viewing of Logan's Run never happened.

Monday. Walked the Kal-Haven Trail w/ Katia & Aparna. It was my first time ever on the trail, which is a real shame since it's such a nice place to walk. Afterwards, we went blueberry picking at Joe Kovach's farm. I hadn't been blueberry picking in at least ten years. It was actually pretty fun. Katia's summer hobby is jam-making, so we picked blueberries (I mostly just ate them) while talking about each others' dissertations, future job prospects, and other assorted tid bits. By 8pm, we had seven pounds of blueberries and blue hands.

Yeah, my last few days in Kalamazoo are turning out quite nice.

i recommend David Lynch's Mulholland Drive. It's a mindblowing psychological thriller. Definitely one of my fave movies of all time.
