Weekend visits

09.06.2003

I was pleasantly surprised by a visit from four of my Kalamazoo friends. Sure, I'd invited people up for the weekend, but I wasn't sure anyone would take me up on that offer. Wow. I'm so lucky to have've made friends w/ some amazing people. J. Edmund, BayJo, Emily, and Dave drove the two-and-a-half hours from Kalamazoo to Saginaw just to say "goodbye" to me one more time.

We drove "into town" (my parents actually live in Shields, farmland, not Saginaw). Walked around the Hamilton Street district a bit, then went into The Red Eye for coffee. And it's one of the few things in Saginaw that's progressively gotten better, rather than worse. This was my coffee house for years, before I moved away from Saginaw. Going back to The Red Eye years ago was the first time I learned what nostalgia feels like.

After stories about Saginaw (some comical, some sad), we drove back home. We played several games of Clue, which some people took quite seriously. I'm glad no one accused me of murder. We tried to stay up later, but everyone fell asleep watching The Terminator.

Mom gave everyone a meal of a breakfast, and everyone left early in the afternoon. I hope they drive safe; I'll see them soon enough, I guess.

Tonight I'm finally going out w/ Matt, my best friend growing up in Saginaw. I've been busy the last few days, and he's busy as a new dad. So this weekend we finally get to go out for a few beers on Hamilton Street. I'm sure we'll end up playing darts (I'll lose miserably), smoke a pack of Winstons, and remember our wild & crazy days. Then we'll walk (not drive) back to his house, because we're grown up now and know better.

My competitive streak goes wild when playing chess. And I lose most of the time. My face would have a mild loser-in-agony expression but you know I'd also be cursing under my breath.

Miguel,

I really wish I could have come up this weekend. I'm sure the others told you, I just had too much work going on; both at the store and for WIDR. I wish you a safe trip to Bolivia and will obviously be keeping contact while you are away (I mean, I'm sending the comcics :) . Speaking of, when should I start sending them?
