Happy Christmas Eve!

12.24.2003

Tonight's Christmas Eve (aka Nochebuena). Sam & I are doing a bit of last minute shopping before heading to tío Adrian's house for the family dinner (we're bringing wine).

Bolivian Christmas isn't celebrated on the day of 25 December, but rather on the night before. In Santa Cruz, the traditional meal is a spitted pig (in La Paz it's some sort of soup, of course), w/ a midnight toast to welcome baby Jesus (yes, I'm serious). Then little kids open their presents, and spend some time playing, before going home to bed.

Sam & I and the abuelitos are spending the night at tío Adrian's house. Tomorrow, we're heading out to The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King w/ a group of cousins. We've been dying to see this movie, and are going opening day (yes, I know you yanks saw it weeks ago).

Well, wishing all of you a Merry Christmas. Mom, Dad, Andy: wish you were here. Also all my friends & family in Kalamazoo, Saginaw, Chicago, New York, Boston, Princeton, Arizona, La Paz, Singapore, The Hague, Leipzig, and wherever else the holidays take you. And a super Channukah to Bay Jo and the Ari-Gur family. Hope you have lots of snow; Sam & I are sweating bullets here in tank tops.

Christmas Eve was awesome in Bolivia! So nice to be here and remember how Bolivians do it!

I am pumped for the movie. I waited in line for 2 hours for tickets, this thing better be good.
