What do you miss most?
01.22.2004Of course I miss my family. Even though I'm used to not seeing them for long spells at a time, the fact that I won't see them for about a year (except for Sam, who visited me) is strange. Especially on holidays.
And I miss all my friends, especially the ones I've been used to seeing every day (or close to it). I miss Kalamazoo — both specifically and in general. It's mostly little things: playing chess at The Fourth Coast, riding mopeds through the Oaklands, midnight movies at the K-10, new comics Wednesdays, boys-only poker night, sipping a cinnamon latte on the steps of East Hall.
I miss those little conveniences of American life: 24-hour DVD rental stores, Meijer & Harding's, home mail delivery, things being open when they're supposed to, laundromats, sitting at a bar & chit-chatting w/ the barista or bartender, respect for traffic lights. Stuff like that.
But. Corny as it sounds, I miss Annie & Sophie the most. Mostly because (unlike friends & family) they can't email me to tell me how they're doing. I know my parents are taking good care of them (thanks a million, btw). But I'm used to waking up w/ Annie (who's lazy like me) and sharing the last of my cereal milk w/ Sophie (who's skinny like me). For over two years, I came home to my two girls. I didn't live alone. Now, I come home to an empty & quiet apartment.

It is the little things that i miss from Kalamazoo. Pretty much all that you mentioned (sans cat). Things are shaping up here, but I am realizing that I might not ever live in kalamazoo again, which means that I might not see all of those wonderful people for a long time, and when I do see them it will not be for the days/weeks/months/years on end that I am accustom to.
