Lent & Giving

03.01.2004

It's the Lenten season. So. Instead of doing a fundraising drive for my website — since I'd blog regardless — I'm doing a fundraising drive for causes I support. If you like my site (or even if you don't), I encourage you to support the following causes:

Christian Children's Fund. This is the most well-known & respected organization for direct child sponsorship. Almost all your money will go to help a needy child get the food, medicine, clothing, and other things he/she needs. I'd encourage you to specifically request a Bolivian child. If you do, I'll make an effort to visit him/her on your behalf, if you'd like.

Mercy Corps. This is sort of an umbrella organization that helps various important causes. Unlike CCF, you can give a one-time donation (I especially like their Mercy Kits), rather than sign up for a longer commitment.

Catholic Relief Services. Similar to Mercy Corps, CRS supports a wide variety of global efforts. Their annual Lenten program, Operation Rice Bowl, aims to provide food for hungry people worldwide.

I've always believed that philosophical or religious ideals should be put into action, not just discussed. There's no need to wait for states to intervene; we can take action ourselves.

I agree. Missionaries accomplish a lot more than the U. N. Now I know that people argue that they have strings attached (mostly that the people have to believe in God before they get food) but at least things are getting done and going to the people themselves. How much have governments given to North Korea and the people are still starving?
