More of the weirdness that's Bolivian politics
03.03.2004Currently, there are two Bolivian film productions in theaters: El atraco & Los híjos del último jardín. Of the two, El atraco is hands down the better film — better cast, better production values, better script, better cinematography, etc. As such, it's received better critical reviews & more box office receipts.
And. So. The cast & crew of Los híjos del último jardín went on hunger strike to demand more people go see their film. What's this, you say? Yes. A hunger strike to demand more people go see their film. Of course, it wouldn't hurt if they (the director) maybe screened the film in more cities/theaters. But the idea that somehow you're entitled to an audience for your work of art is just ... well ... insane.

I couldn't believe that the crew of Los Hijos del Ultimo Jardin were on hunger strike, I don't know if that is insane or hilarious. What do they want??, to compel me to see their film?, or to force the government to buy tickets?. The only thing I can say is "let's hope they don't start blockades or affiliate to COB.

I'm going on a hunger strike if Wilstermann doesn't win the Apertura tournament.

I saw the film in January and I thought it was a pretty good film! Okay, cast and stuff maybe wasn't that good, not like in those "great Hollywood"-films. But I don't think that's so important for the main message of the film! And I guess that's why they're in hunger strike. People that have enough money to go to see a film in the cinema(which is mostly the upper "white" class)does not want to know about conflicts between indians(the big majority of Bolivia) and half-indians(native bolivians with mother or father from Europe or Nothamerica). They do not want to know how instead of cooperating they're loosing traditions, native languages like quechua and aymara...the job-problem and perspectives of Bolivia's youth. At least that's the message I got from the film... no creen? And that's why other cinemas maybe don't want to show this film in their cinemas, they know people don't like that sort of film, they make more money showing other movies...and there aren't that much cinemas in Bolivia neither...(I think). I remember a cinema in bolivia's capital "Sucre", wich was full of fleas and murcielagos..., they closed, now there is no cinema at all. Bueno, eso tenia que decirlo(escribirlo), he encontrado este site en busca de otras cosas sobre Bolivia y leeiendo estos commentarios...:0) Hasta la proxima!

Actually, the film producers have been reluctant to show the film in other places. Also, Sanjines' previous films (like "Nacion Clandestina") where much better received. The problem's that this film's message is much too simplistic: indigenous people good, city people bad.
I enjoyed the film, but the execution of the message was pretty amateurish. And the message itself was a bit too ham-handed. Of course, this isn't really a Sanjines film. His wife was directing it (her first work) and died of illnes midway through. So the chopiness of the film might be explained by both factors.
Either way, going on strike to demand people see your art is pretty lame.

Uuups, well I didn't know about these things...Sorry, now I understand why you were saying going on hunger strike for this reason was pretty lame. My thesis about cinema's not wanting to show "critical" movies was a bit too....(my english is really bad, I just know the word in german) anyways.
But back to the message of the film, how should a film demonstrate bolivia's problems with all it's complications then? That seems impossible...Whatever, I guess people that have s.th to do with Bolivia know it's problems anyways....there are too many! Alors, salut!
