Couldn't resist
03.20.2004While I like Law & Order (sure, it's no The Shield, but then, what is?), I'll readily admit it's plots are repetitive. Here's a Law & Order plot generator online (via GeekPress). It's funny 'cause it's true.
Which made me think of something. In memory of my 100 favorite songs list (which should be updated this summer, make it a 1 July tradition) — I think I'll try to list my 25 favorite sit-coms. Anyone else up for the challenge? I'll post them on 1 April & we can compare.
Totally unrelated: I updated to the new Mac OS (v. 10.3.3) plus some other software updates & widget apps. Being awake Saturday early afternoon has advantages, I guess.
-----
UPDATE: OK. I just thought it might be tough to come up w/ 25 good/great sit-coms. So how about a top 10 list, instead? Also, you can use non-US TV shows, of course. But they must be situation commedies, not funny soap operas (e.g. "El verano de 98") or variety shows (e.g. "Kids in the Hall") or dramas (e.g. "ER").

Wow, can you really find 25(!) excellent sitcoms? Sth for me to think about. N.

Sure, Nenad. Don't you remember your fave sitcoms when you were a kid?
Anyways, this should be fun. You're on.

Your song list is great! I would've chosen many of the same songs.
I probably would've also included -
"Just like honey" - Jesus & Mary Chain
"How Soon is Now" - Smiths
"Courage" - the Tragically Hip
"Nobody Loves Me" - Portishead
But since that list ist vorbei, I'll also take up the challenge. April 1st I'll post my 25 favorite all-time situational comedies.
Cheers!

25 is a lot, we all watch way too much TV.

Do we have to wait until April 1 to give you our list? N.

Yes, I probably watch way too much TV (not having a TV in Bolivia means I rent way too many DVDs).
You can post your list whenever you want. Email me the link, and I'll link to them when I post my list. This should be fun.

Yeah, b/c I already have my top 25 favorite sitcoms, lol. Melanie, I am sure you're not surprised. Okay, I'll try to be patient.

TV junkie talking there, right Nenad?
I am not up for the challenge ... I may have seen two or three on a regular base, not even sure they are good ones. Nenad listed 25 and I was dumb founded.

Yeah, you know I couldn't wait, so I already made my list. Lol.

Oh, it was easy to come up with 25, but that's me, hihi. I wish I was so good w/ stats too. N.

I can do ten, but can we include sitcoms that we saw on afternoon reruns even if they were made before we were born? Or to they have to be contemporary? 10 is easy for me. Funny thing though, as much as I used to love sitcoms, I only watch The Simpsons or Malcolm anymore.

Reruns are totally fine. Any sit-com, from any country at any time. I'm listing a few reruns as well (I watch most TV late at night, so it's all syndicated).

Interesting to glance at your song list. Not surprising that we share some songs, not surprising that there were some songs that left my head scratching.
What I thought interesting is that there were a couple of songs that I liked better when done by other artists: "City of New Orleans" as done by Willie Nelson, "Long Black Veil" a.d.b. Johnny Cash, "Sweet Jane" a.d.b. Lou Reed, etc. In the extreme case, I liked a different version ("Revolution 1") of the same song, done by the same artist...
Which got me to thinking: do you like the lyrics or sound of a song? Obviously the answer is both, but in some cases, you have to like one more than the other...

Mike:
I pay a lot of attention to lyrics, so most of my "favorite" songs are lyrics based. However, some are "memory" based — as in they remind of a time/place/person. The original list was meant to list not just songs, but versions of songs. Hence, the use of artist & song title. I've never heard the Johnny Cash version of "Long Black Veil", but I'd probably like that much better (an amazing voice, I got to see his last tour). I like the Cowboy Junkies version of "Sweet Jane" better because of the slow, sad pace of the song. I tend to listen to a lot of indie bands (not top 40 radio), so I end up liking lots of those songs that most people never heard off.

The head scratching wasn't from songs I haven't heard of (while there were some of those, in addition to my top 40 fixes, I try to wander far afield myself), but songs I was surprised to see listed as some of the "100 best"...
de gustubus non es disputatum, I suppose... but there were some good ones on your list. and let me second Tom on the Portishead...
