Pulling all-nighters

05.18.2004

Decided to pull a legitimate all-nighter. I've been needing to finish up that paper to send out for publication (the one born from this idea). Since I couldn't really sleep, I decided to head out to the only 24-hour joint in the entire city — Café Ciudad. Fortunately, it was empty & quiet & I found a table w/ an outlet for Kaneda.

Of course, two slightly buzzed characters came over to my table, bummed some smokes, and talked to me for about an hour. Did my best to sound interested, be polite, then get them to leave me alone so I could get back to writing.

A greasy burger & fries, two cups of coffee, and several hours later, I'd written a full six pages (single-spaced), putting me well into the paper (almost half finished). I finished running the multivariate OLS models shortly after the Lima trip — the pages wrapped up are the analysis & methods sections. Now I get to cannibalize previous papers for lit review & theory sections.

Feels good to get some actual work done. Running around hoping to (re)schedule interviews or pick up data that isn't yet ready for me to pick up is rather draining.

Now I just need to stay awake until 8-10pm tango practice at Hotel Torino.

... wow 1 hr ... not so good Miguel. I usually have to come up with some kind of excuse to get rid of unwanted conversation... :)

Well, it was late at night (around 4am) and I was in a near-empty restaurant where the staff don't know me in the middle of La Paz. My biggest concern was not to piss these guys off so they'd steal my laptop.

Tango, where is a dancing "school" of that kind in Kalamazoo?

Not sure if there is a tango school in Kalamazoo. But I'm getting pretty good.
