Know when to hold 'em
06.27.2004W/ Jay back in town, we had ourselves another poker night at O Mundo Café. It was also Alison's despedida; she's going to southern France on an archaeological dig. Anyhow. I more than doubled my money at the end of the night, up more than Bs. 30.
In other good luck news, scrappy little Czech Republic's soccer team beat "old Europe" powerhouse Germany to advance to the 2004 European Championship semi-finals. It's very exciting. And now they're up 3-0 over Denmark. I'm rooting for them to win the whole cup.
I'm taking Sunday easy before my criss-cross country trip. Lunch w/ relatives in San Miguel. A bit of wi-fi on the Prado. Spend a few hours at O Mundo Café playing chess. Then, sleep.

I wish we had Euro2004 broadcast. The only way to watch the games are to buy on PPV .. and you have to be a comcast suscriber ... my apt complex doesn't have that service option. Plus my French friends are no longer watchin ... wonder why ... ;)

The German team didn't play well. However, bad luck met incompetence in the second half since Germany dominated the game during that period. Lots of chances but only a hit on the goalpost.
In any case, if you want to cheer for the underdog don't pick the "scrappy little Czech Republic" They were one of the favorites to win the whole thing anyway. Their players are high paid stars in the best leagues of Europe. If you want to cheer for the underdog, cheer for Greece.
Greece came out of nowhere. Qualifying for EURO2004 even was sensational for the team. Then they beat Portugal in the first round, got a draw with spain... and (after a loss to Russia) beat the great french team(current EURO chanpion and world champion of 1998) in the Quarterfinals.
They play the Czech Republic in the semis. It is on Thursday I think.
My guess is, however that Portugal will beat Holland in the other semi and meet the Czech Republic for the Championship.
Btw, Greece plays soccer the German way - just better than Germany this time. They have a tight aggressive defense but don't score a lot. Many people attribute Greece's success to their coach, legendary German Otto Rehagel. Funnily they already call him Rehakles over there. :-)

Huh. Didn't realize the Czech team was so favored. Certainly not in the Bolivian press, which assumed the big names would win.

I agree with Andres - wish the Euro2004 were broadcast on ESPN or Fox Sports. At no cost. But why broadcast for free when a profit is to be had?
And ... Ich bin ein fan von Deutschland. Deutschland über alles! Prost, prost, prost; wir wollen einen haben; prost, prost, prost!
