Goodbye, Santa Cruz

07.12.2004

Despite the sur winds & a nagging cough, I enjoyed my stay in Santa Cruz. Didn't get to see all the relatives, for a variety of reasons, but it was a good week-long stay. Tonight I'm getting sent off w/ a dish of majao tapao, made special by tía Lea.

It's always interesting to see the news from this side of the country. The TV news here's more sensationalist, all car wrecks & crimes, w/ victims & perps meeting on live TV to sling insults at each other. Then there's always a fashion section, w/ news on the oh-so-important social scene here. There's even an entire little paparazzi dedicated to it (even the free weekly VIP has an online site). Yesterday, Roxana Sandoval, the feisty movimiementista who's "muy macha" tossed her hat in the ring for the Santa Cruz alcaldia. Meanwhile, referendum & Copa América news fills most of the airwaves.

Still, I've much to do in La Paz my last 10 days. At least one family parrillada, I want one last peña, maybe one more tango lesson, a despedida w/ my friends, gift shopping — not to mention all my last-minute work-related items.

Good news: Looks live I've an apartment lined up for me in Kalamazoo. Hardwood floors, Lovell Street, garage, blocks from three 24-hour cafés & my favorite Vietnamese take-out.

On related note: Sometimes I forget not everyone lives in cyberspace. Sorry. But. If you know me & can't get a hold of me via email in 24hrs, you should worry. Conversely, I'll try not to.
