London plan

12.11.2004

Officially turned in my grades yesterday, after accidentally stumbling upon the last few minutes of the departmental holiday party. I'd forgotten all about it, what w/ the mad dash of finals week. By the time I got there, there was no more plasticware, so I settled for some (delicious, btw) meatballs & toothpicks.

Found my new Employee Personal Data form in my office mail. Discovered I already have a PhD (yes!), but was born in 1965 (no!). I'm supposed to send in the corrections.

Then came home, sick w/ a throat flu. I think the worst is over now, after a long night's sleep, but my throat's still pretty clogged. Just so's I'm not sick by the time I fly to London. Speaking of which. Yesterday morning, I worked out my itinerary for my day-and-a-half. Here it is:

Wednesday

Arrive at Heathrow, take the tube to Picadilly Circus (£3.60), walk to my hostel, the Astor Victoria (£10/night).

Thursday

Wake up, and head to the government buildings. Stop at a cybercafé for 15 mins (£1), then into Westminster Cathedral (free). Meander past Buckingham Palace, towards Westminster Abbey & Houses of Parliament, then north along Whitehall to Trafalgar Square. Lunch near Saint Martin-in-the-Fields (£10 our less). Hit the National Gallery (free). Then to the East End for a cheap Pakistani/Indian dinner (£10 or less). At night, take tube from Liverpool back to Victoria (£1.60) — or save tube fair & meander back to Victoria by walking along the Thames.

Friday

Wake up, and take tube from Victoria to Oxford Circus (£1.60). Walk to The British Museum (free). If time allows, pop in the British Library (free), before a light lunch somewhere near King's Cross Station (£10 or less). Then, back to Liverpool Station to take the Stansted Express (£13) to catch my 5:10pm flight to Rome.

Total estimated cost of London: £67 ($130).

Wow, that's pretty intense planning. I'm the complete opposite, I pretty much decide once I arrive how to spend my day, although with such a limited time it is best to make the most of your time.

Free museums are always nice.

Wow... so much planning. I hardly can stick to plans. Well, don't forget to make allowances for serendipitous encounters!
