60 years

06.27.2005

Went home this weekend for my grandparents' 60th anniversary, a small family barbecue hosted by my parents. It was a pleasant time to see most of the Coates family. And the low key event was exactly what I've come to expect (and enjoy).

Perhaps its remarkable that anyone can celebrate 60 years of marriage. Though I think generational differences make it less uncommon. Still, though, it's a remarkable accomplishment. And I hardly notice a difference in my Gramma & Grampa over the years; they're just as lively & spunky as ever, perhaps even more so.

Everyone loves their grandparents, I'm sure. But I always have a special bond w/ mine. After all, lived w/ them my first half year in Michigan (Sam & I stayed w/ them while my parents were still in Bolivia selling off our home, etc). And we just got used to constantly visiting them. After all, there's always plenty of ice cream in the fridge & a gin rummy or dominoes game handy. I even visited them in Florida for spring break (which only reinforced my desire to grow old & retire to ice cream socials & porch sittin' marathons). Then lived another summer in their basement while studying for comps.

From them, I learned to appreciate hard work, American history (I remember Grammas small library of American Revolution history books), and the joys of watching Jeopardy! and such classics as Hee Haw and Scarecrow & Mrs. King. I learned how to gut a bluegill, water ski, set a dock in April, and run a trolling motor. And tons more stuff like that.

Anyhow, it's been a few days, but just wanted to wish them a great anniversary.

60 years married, is no small feat. A big congrats to your grand parents.

That's a kind of example I'd like to follow.

they lived a simple uncomplicated life which makes me very jealous. I hope someone took pics for me since I could not be there.
