Kids survey
06.30.2005Here's a quick survey specifically for parents of young kids (kindergarten age or younger). It's loosely related to the PBS discussion below.
This questionnaire goes especially out to: Novalí, Sebastian, Lily & Avery, Emmett, Xavier, and any other kids out there I may've missed.
What are your favorite TV shows? List as many as five. If you can, let me know what channel they're on & a brief description of why you like that show.
-----
UPDATE: I'll keep the comment thread (and survey) open for a while yet. But, so far, it seems that kids watch more PBS than I suspected. Which does suggest PBS is more "useful" than I may've originally thought. Not sure if that changes my position on public television, but I'm willing to mull it over.

Well this is Novi's dad... and I know for a fact she does watch a lot of PBS shows. Station WTTW in Chicago has a lot of good programming. I like the shows Zoom, Barney, Dragon Tales, Buster, and of course Sesame Str., and I know she likes a few others. You can check them out at: www.wttw.com

Xavier says he likes all of his "babah's". Yeah, don't know what it means either.
Top five:
Backyardigans- 11am Nick
-great animation, and writing
Little Bear-5:30pm Noggin
-a "quiet time" program. Also produced by Marice Sendak
Dragon Tales-6:00pm PBS/WTTW
-he likes dragons
Spongebob Squarepants- Nick
-great writing
Thomas the Tank Engine- was on PBS
-great writing, uses model trains. Kids love the model trains.
All of these shows are geared for children with special consideration that parents are ALSO watching the show. I find these show excellent as well.

well, avery kind-of gets stuck watching what lily wants to watch, so they pretty much have the same favorites. they both love clifford the big red dog on pbs. they both really like dora (mostly for the singing and yelling and jumping) and spongebob squarepants on nick. lily used to watch almost all the shows on the disney channel when she was little, but they haven't made new episodes of most of their shows in years, so we don't watch them too much anymore. their absolute favorite of all time would have to be caillou on pbs. i can't stand the show, but for some reason a bald, whiney four year old cartoon kid really does it for them.

umm... bastian doesn't really watch tv. but he does like arthur. and that is on PBS. he likes to watch the NOVA shows on PBS more than anything. but that's my kid. and he likes the simpsons. which, as you know, needs no explanation. We don't have cable so if we do watch anything it's mostly tapes or dvds. Sebastian just informed me to let you know his favorite is the power puff girls.

I know a woman who leaves Sesame Street on for her dogs while she is at work. She says it is to teach them how to talk. Personally, I like to leave NPR on for my dog. She listens to the BBC world service all night, some nights, poor dog.
