Course description

This course provides an introduction to the development and current context of politics in Latin America. We will explore the types of political regimes and political movements that have a history in the region, with particular focus on the interrelated nature of political, social, and economic issues. Major themes to be addressed include military regimes and transitions to democracy, revolution and the U.S. response, economic development, debt and trade, poverty and inequality, human rights, the drug trade, race relations, and the role of religion.
