I think that he effictively ended his career with such an inflammatory statement, without providing any evidence. In our society, journalists already take a major beating because of credibility issues, and to have a spokesman of one of the more credible news agencies make a completely unfounded accusation throws away any progress that has previously been made. In short, yes, his resignation was necessary.
