Notes on Chapter 7
Tomorrow's class will focus on the European Union, since we'll discuss the UN specifically on Tuesday. Still, be sure to read the entire chapter. For brief reading on the European Union, I highly recommend looking at this article (from wikipedia) on the expansion of the EU, as well as this general overview of the European Union itself. You can also browse the official EU website. Notice that the book is a bit out of date, since there are now 25 EU member states; the current EU's president-elect is Portugal's José Durão Barroso (currently, it's Italy's Romano Prodi).

Just an aditional info on the Wikipedia article. The European Commission suggested that accession talks with Turkey may be started now. This does not mean, that Turkey will join the EU in 2007. Indeed the report allows for exit strategies, that include the complete abandonment of negotiations based on violations of human rights in Turkey, for instance. The accession of Turkey to the European Union will happen earliest in 10-15 years from now (that is an optimistic estimate).
There are high concerns about whether or not Turkey really fits in with the European Union.
