A problem was raised a while ago about spam email that, perhaps, originated from this website. It's a real possibility. There are "spambots" out there that will "spider" through webpages looking for email addresses. So if you post your email address, it's a potential target for spam. And if you use a Windows machine, you are especially vulnerable to virus emails. Below is a very brief tutorial on how to avoid spam and still post your email.

First, you can post your email as a link on this page. To do so, type something like this:

<a href=mailto:address@web.com>link</a>

Notice that the email address is not displayed, it just says "link". You click on the link to engage your email client (the program you use to send email) and it will send email. Note: the address I posted is fake, as far as I know.

After the "mailto: ...." code, you normally put down your email address. For more security, you can use unicode to encode your entire email address. You can learn how to do this manually here or you can use this site to spit out unicode for you here.

A few final words on spam: First, don't reply to it or click on the "remove from mailing list" link on it. That just tells the spammer that the email address is a real address (someone reads it) and they will keep you on their list. Second, don't forward spam to other people. All those emails about starving kids, kids w/ cancer, etc. are spam. No charities do (or even can) track those emails to have the penny for every email. For more information on spam and preventing it, read this website.

To start out with I thought that the movie at The Little Theater was excellent. I really did not want to go at first but I needed the extra credit. I wish I would have talked my friends into comming along with me. I think they would have liked it also. Plus it was free. One thing that I did not get was that the movie was based on a Neo Nazi that was Jewish. Was the movie the life story of the writer or exactly what was the deal about that. I didn't really catch that before the movie during the intro. If somebody could shed some light on that that would be great.

I just found an article online (using Google) that points out that churches are still segregated. This isn't surprising, of course, since the US is pretty highly segregated. Interestingly, the article (it came from a religious newsletter, the Baptist Standard) discusses the need to change worship styles in order to attract an ethnically diverse audience. That seems to fit w/ our discussion today.

Hey kids! There are two things that I want to mention: 1) Nora and I are planning a 'group date' of sorts to The Believer tomorrow night. We are meeting at around 7 PM at The Little Theater. Remember that you must pick up a ticket beforehand. They will begin issuing these tickets at 6 PM. After the showing we are planning on going to Up-n-Under. If anyone has any questions, call me at 323-9727. We hope that everyone will be able to join us! 2) On Friday, there will be a presentation pertaining to the government's response to Sept. 11 and how this affected our civil liberties. President Floyd and several professors will be speaking. This will take place at 4 PM in Brown auditorium located in the business college. If anyone is interested in forming a group to go to this, either call me or talk to me in class tomorrow. -Jess

I handed out the two readings by Ayn Rand today in class. I will have more copies later if you weren't in class today.

The last day to turn in the extra credit papers is Tuesday (for Bowling for Columbine and The Believer).

If you haven't already done the readings for tomorrow, you can skip the Peter Signer piece on animal rights. We might come back to that issue, but we'll focus on the other authors instead.
